This page is written to be read, not to be skipped. It covers two different groups of people: builders who sign in to use the map, and homeowners whose building-permit records appear on it. If you are a homeowner who found us because of a postcard or a neighbour, the part you want is "If your home is on the map".
If your home is on the map
The map shows homes in Los Angeles where someone has filed an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) permit application with the City of Los Angeles. We did not collect that information from you, and we did not buy it. It comes from the City's own public building-permit records, published as open data by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). Anyone can download the same file for free.
What we show
| We show | We never show |
|---|---|
|
The street address on the permit application The ZIP code Which stage the application has reached (plan check, corrections, ready to issue) The dates on the application The permit or application number |
Owner names Phone numbers Email addresses Anything about who lives in the home Anything about income, finances or household |
We do not add data about you from any other source. We do not buy consumer data, credit data, or contact data. The map is built from the permit file and from the shape of the land (parcel boundaries and distances), nothing else.
What builders can do with it
A builder who has a spot in your ZIP code can see your address on the map, and can mail a physical postcard to it. That is the only contact we enable.
We never text homeowners, never call homeowners, and never give a builder a homeowner's phone number or email address — we do not have them. We also do not sell or hand out lists of addresses: the map is looked at in a browser, a few homes at a time, and bulk download is not a feature.
How to have your home taken off the map. Two ways, both free, no account needed:
- If you got a postcard: enter the 8-character code on the back at the stop-postcards page. No builder on our map will be able to mail your address again.
- Otherwise: use "Is your home on this map? Ask us to take it off" at the bottom of the home page. Give the street address; an email is optional and only used to confirm we have done it.
We honour removals whether or not the permit record is still public. We do not ask you for a reason.
Why the address is on a map at all
An ADU permit application is a public record in California, and the City publishes it so that neighbours, contractors and researchers can see what is being built. Our map makes that same public record easier for a licensed builder to read. If you would rather not appear, the removal above is the point of that box — use it.
If you are a builder using the map
What we keep about you
- Your email address — that is how you sign in. We send a sign-in link to it. We do not use a password.
- Which ZIP codes you have a spot in, and when you took them.
- Which homes you have marked (saved, contacted, not interested) so the map remembers next time.
- If you mail a postcard: the address it went to and the date, so we can honour an opt-out and so you can see what you already sent.
What we do not do with it
We do not sell your email address, rent it, or hand it to a data broker. We do not share which homes you are working on with other builders on the map — that is the point of a spot. We do not send you marketing from other companies.
Who else can see it
We use a small number of service providers to run the product, and they see only what they need to:
| Provider | What it does | What it sees |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database and sign-in | Your email address, your spots, your marks |
| Cloudflare | Serves the web pages | Normal web-server records (IP address, browser, page requested) |
| Google Cloud Run | Runs the question box | The question you typed |
| Anthropic | Answers the question box | The question you typed and the permit rows needed to answer it. Not your email address. |
| Lob | Prints and mails postcards | The delivery address and the card artwork, when you choose to mail one |
Cookies
We use one kind: the session that keeps you signed in after you click the link in your email. There is no advertising cookie, no tracking pixel, and no analytics product following you across other websites.
How long we keep it
Your account and marks stay until you ask us to delete them. Ask and we delete them — there is no retention period we hold you to. Postcard records are kept because an opt-out has to be enforceable against them.
Your choices
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it and close your account. California residents have these rights under the CCPA, and we apply them to everyone rather than checking where you live. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of there.
Children
This is a tool for licensed construction businesses. It is not for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly keep information about children.
Security
Sign-in is by emailed link, so there is no password of yours for us to lose. Which rows you can read is enforced by the database itself, not by the page in your browser. We are a small operation and we will not pretend to a certification we do not have: if something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you.
Changes
If we change this page in a way that matters, we will change the date at the top and say so on the map. The current version is always the one here.
How to reach us
For a removal, the two forms above are the fastest route and they work without us. For anything else — a question, a correction, a deletion request — email hello@aduleadmap.com.
